And we’re back!

Wow it has been a long time since anyone blogged here. Sorry folks.

Obviously we have been busy at GLR, but that’s no excuse. I’ll try to do a better job about posing in the future. The good news is that there’s quite a lot to report!

For example, we have several new DJ’s and shows. Be sure to check out our schedule for a list of all the shows on Green Light Radio. A big welcome to the new DJ’s and volunteers who are helping out at GLR.

There are plenty of new interviews from members of the crew who have been busy talking to all kinds of people and musicians. Check out out website for links to some ultra cool interviews.

Keep checking back for more posts. In the meantime, you can find us on facebook to see what’s going on at GLR.

A final note- be sure to check out local musician Rebecca Abraxas at SmithKlein Gallery tonight and Interstate Stash Express at the Dicken’s Opera House in Longmont tomorrow for their CD release party!

Mmmmm chocolate!

Last night, a few of us sampled some insanely good chocolate that I had purchased at the Boulder Book store. We tend to sample some amazing chocolates, but occasionally there is one that stands out as exceptional. This was one of those cases. The company is called Ginger Elizabeth Chocolates, and this woman knows how to balance flavor. In the past, we have tried some chocolates where either the flavorings were too strong, too weak or there was too much sugar. This was the case with one local chocolate company, except for the peppermint flavor. In that case, I think the peppermint cut the taste of the sugar. With Ginger Elizabeth chocolate bars, the flavors are so perfectly balanced that one ends up being completely blown away. In the case of the crispy coconut kafir lime bar, the flavor of the lime is just right. Most other citrus chocolate bars are like taking a spray of citrus furniture police to the mouth and following it with a hershey’s kiss. This is not the case with this bar. The lime is subtle and builds while never overpowering the chocolate flavor. By the way, when opening the package, be prepared to be knocked off you feet with the most wonderful chocolate aroma ever. The crunch of the coconut is spectacular, and everything combines for a gastronomic orgy in the mouth.

We also tried the vanilla bean almond toffee bar. I admit I made an error I am always cautioning other to avoid. We went with the milk chocolate before the dark. Usually when this happens, the dark chocolate ends up tasting a bit bitter. However, despite the error, we could all see that the dark chocolate was also nicely balanced. The key with this bar is to eat the entire square of chocolate, not bite a small piece off the edge. There are large chunks of almonds that are toasted to perfection, and I missed that with my first bite. Once my tooth found the almond on the second bite, I knew that I was in for a treat. I have a sensitive palate when it comes to nuts (ok quit laughing), and too often companies use rancid nuts. The bar we sampled was definitely fresh, and the nuts were clearly as far from rancid as possible. Everything about these bars was extraordinary. I would highly, highly recommend this company to anyone who wants good quality chocolate. Damn, that was excellent.

I just wanted to thank all the listeners who tuned in last night! We have had some great stats with more people tuning in, so thank you all. Keep those requests coming, and let us know if you have shit to say. We want to hear. Just a note too that the Sex and Chocolate show will be moving to every other week. We had a fun show last night, so catch us again after the Saturday Night Special the week after next. Of course the SNS will be on every Sat, so you should keep listening to the Sat line up every week!!

Sims ‘Bad Time Zoo’ (Doomtree)

Wow! Too much is one of the tracks off Sims’ new album, Bad Times Zoo. I immediately loved it and was drawn in completely. Interestingly, Sims is from Minnesota, a place surprisingly filled with musical talent but often ignored. With rapid fire lyrics contrasted with a slower tempo, Too Much comes off as completely bad-ass while still listenable.  One can definitely hear the R&B influence in this piece.  Sims has managed to sound innovative and interesting in a genre where that is no easy task. Though he tends to focus on general discontent and empty feelings, his music is anything but. It’s something for the masses, and rich or poor, everyone can relate. I highly recommend listening to the entire album. I found a preview at Co-sign Collective, where finding new releases and interesting bands is easy. Check it out for sure!

Album Review

I don’t have enough of a true music background to create an outstanding music review. However, I know what I like and what I don’t like. I was lucky enough to get a preview of the new album by Midnight Juggernauts, The Crystal Axis. There are some fantastic reviews on this album, so don’t stop after reading this one! However, in order to get the real picture, I would suggest listening for yourself in addition to trying to catch a few more reviews. For whatever reason, it seems that the reviews I found for this new album were exceptionally well written. In fact, in one case, I’d offer a body part to write as well as the author. Sometimes reading a great piece of written material is such a turn on, but I digress. The point of a review is more to offer an opinion and/or describe a piece of work. In the case of The Crystal Axis, the album doesn’t have everyone claiming it’s epic, but it is a noteworthy effort. The album flows and sometimes darts from the start to the end, but there are two songs in particular that stood out to me.

The first song off the album that eventually pleased my ear was Vital signs. I hate that I’m about to admit this, but on first listen, it almost seemed a tad too long. Maybe if I had been on the dance floor, this wouldn’t have been the case. At first, it dragged just a little and became repetitious. I’m not the only one who believes this is a song that needs to grow on you though, and after a few listens, it becomes a welcome ear-worm. Funny how songs can do that. In other words, it’s nothing that catches your “oh wow!” antenna right away, but it’s interesting enough to keep listening. Eventually, it becomes almost an addiction. It’s not quite experimental, but there are some interesting and rhythmic sounds that, despite being a bit out there, I predict will be quite appealing to the masses. The Australian band took a risk on this song, and it payed off well.

While the album is an overall success, Lara Versus The Savage Pack, in particular, got my attention right off the bat. This song has the “wow” factor, and it’s catchy and cool from start to finish. Pretty much everyone can agree that the funky, toe-tapping beats make the song a highlight on the album. The three band members venture into something that could still definitely be considered electropop throughout the album, but the added layers of sound, from their garage rock beginnings to their more recent influences, help explain why this band can be hard to define. Lara versus The Savage Pack, while having a slightly moody side, will leave listeners wanting more.

The music on the album isn’t the only thing that is above average with this latest move by the Midnight Juggernauts. There are other reasons why this band is grabbing center stage at the moment. People have been talking about their exceptionally creative videos and the cover art for their albums. In the case the video Lara Versus the Savage Pack, here is what the band’s lead singer had to say when introducing it:
“Here’s a paper-animated clip by our friends Lucinda Schreiber and Beatrice Pegard. They shot us frame by frame in various paper animated scenarios, and then further reprinted those scenes and again re-shot those layers in further inventive scenarios.”
The video, among others from the new album, is truly spectacular and artistic.

One great way to check out new and interesting happenings in the music world is to go to Co-SignCollective.com. That’s where I found the Midnight Juggernauts latest album. I also found out that Dirty Vegas has new music out too! So definitely take a look.

Happy Holidaze and new year to everyone.

Don’t forget to catch all the fabulous stuff going on at Green Light Radio. Check out our schedule for daily shows and other important information.

More blogy words to come, so check back here. I skipped out on an X-MAS show, but I did play Patton Oswalt’s “Christmas Shoes” for a laugh on Thursday. Not to offend anyone, but that was about the funniest thing I have heard in a really long time.

Cheers!

Woa!

Jeez, there are so few posts on this blog. Well, time to correct that.

A few weeks ago, a few of us got together and tried some chocolate with pop rocks in it by Chuau. We have tried this company before, and discovered that the chocolate is one of the best in terms of quality. This one was no exception. The chocolate was exceptional. What an odd thing though. It was weird to have little explosions in the mouth as the chocolate melted. Then came the heat of chili peppers with increasing explosions. Trippy. I liked it, even though it was an odd experience. Rocky seemed a little freaked out with both the pop rocks and the chili peppers. I had forgotten how powerful those little pop rocks are, and they were loud too! DJ Pecas got one of those suckers to pop right into the mic. POW! In conclusion, most of us liked it and would recommend it, even though Rocky got a little weirded out by the whole experience.

Other than that, not much new to report. I forgot to bring chocolate last Saturday. Actually, I lost the chocolate I was going to bring. I still can’t find the little individually wrapped Italian chocolates I got from the Peppercorn. No idea where they could be. If I can’t find them, I will have to buy something else for this Saturday.

Don’t forget to tune in Thursday right after Mr. Anonymous to hear some interesting new tunes from bands like Swim Club, Apples in Stereo, Plan B, Western States Motel and the Slew. Of course, there will be some of my all time favorites on the play list as well.

Everybody get yourselves ready for the holidaze, because I have a feeling GLR is going to shake things up a bit. We have a phone line and can take requests! Now it’s time for some fun. Be sure to check out the Saturday line up, because, from morning to night, there’s always something interesting and maybe even a little crazy on the air.
Ggirl: Thursdays 6-8pm, Chaos with Ggirl
Saturdays 8-10pm, The sex and chocolate show

What you’ve been waiting for

No playlist this time, but let me tell you about a cool new band from San Francisco called Weekend. Their sound is hard to define. Just when you think they sound like one band, they immediately start sounding like something else familiar, something you can’t quite put your finger on. Oddly, their myspace page claims they are punk/shoegaze/psychadelic. I’m not sure how these three genres can combine in any kind of harmonious way, but that’s the story. I definitely get the shoegaze. I’m just struggling a little bit with the punk part. Then again, I haven’t heard much from this band, so I should hold my tongue until I listen to more of their stuff. Still, I’ll give them punk over Avril Lavigne any day. If you get a chance, check out their new tune “Comma Summer.”

And now to the chocolate. Remember last time when I posted about this amazing chocolate? Well, I tried something else by this same company. I was once again blown away. The chocolate pretzel rods were amazing, but the chocolate cranberry almond myrtles were irresistible. I ate too many. Now I can reveal the name of the company. It’s Long Grove, and products can be found at Pharmaca in Boulder.  The thing is that Pharmaca only carries Long Grove products during the holidays, so you might want to hurry and pick up something.

Don’t forget to tune in Thursdays after Mr Anonymous to hear me play some new and interesting music. And catch us on Saturday nights for a little sex and chocolate. We would love to know what you’re thinking, so feel free to contact us at kglrfm@gmail.com

Oh! And there’s a new album by Ego Vs Id!!!  http://www.myspace.com/egovsid

Sweet~!
